I've heard of it, but I don't know what it is!

I'd like to share the quick story for those of you out there!

What is the Tower of Babel?

When I hear the word "Tower of Babel" I think of the Tarot card tower (representing accidents, etc.), and I have no idea what it is but only a vague knowledge that it has "collapsed".

Thinking like that,

Why did the Tower of Babel collapse?

Don't you wonder so in the first place?

I would like to give you the brief story of why.

Synopsis of the Tower of Babel

Once upon a time, all the humans on earth were connected by a single language.

Then the humans said.

People image

Come, let us build our city and our tower. Let us build a tower so huge that the tip of the tower will reach to the sky. Let us build for ourselves a tower that will never disappear!

And the people steadily built the huge tower, using bricks and asphalt.

And God was watching them.

God image

I see, if the humans speak the same language, they will create such the tower.... Then I will scatter the humans and make them speak different languages.

God then scattered the humans over all the land and disrupted the language of the entire land.

Thus ended the city-building and tower-building of the humans.

About this land where God has confused men and languages,

Babel

The people began to call it so.

Did the Tower of Babel collapse?

This is the story of the Tower of Babel.

The image I had of the tower collapsing does not actually seem to be described in the Old Testament "Book of Genesis".

And it doesn't seem to say why God disrupted the people and their language either.

Scholarly image

Because the people built the tower and tried to challenge God.

This is the common interpretation.

In addition to this story, there is also an article that summarizes various stories from the "Book of Genesis" of the Old Testament.
