Illustration of David and Goliath

David is a very important figure in the Old Testament who becomes a prophet and king of Israel.

In this article, I would like to introduce the episode in which David defeats a giant soldier named Goliath.

Before the episode

Have you ever heard of the statue of David?

I am sure you must have seen it in your art class, Michelangelo's David.

It is one of the most famous sculptures of the Renaissance.

Even if you don't know the David episode, you probably know the statue of David.

In fact, this statue of David represents a scene in which David is about to fight a battle with Goliath and is taking aim to throw a rock at him.

What kind of battle with Goliath is depicted in the statue of David?

Let's take a look at it right away.

Battle with Goliath

The battle between David and Goliath is depicted in the Old Testament book of "1 Samuel."

When the Israeli army and the Philistine army were fighting, Goliath was a giant soldier with a height of about 3 meters who was in the Philistine army.

Goliath's provocation

When Goliath appeared from the Philistine camp, he said that

Let's have a single combat between me and a brave man from your army. If your brave man wins, the Philistines will be your slaves. But if I win, you will be slaves of the Philistines.

The Israelite army trembled at the Philistines' overwhelming size difference.

No, it's absolutely impossible. We will definitely lose.

Thus, the Israelite soldiers were afraid of Goliath and were humiliated without challenging him to a fight.

David, appears

David, a shepherd, was visiting the Israelite camp to deliver food to his brother who had joined the Israelite army.

Hmm? What in the world is going on here?

There David heard about Goliath's provocation.

I can not believe that! Who is that unreasonable guy! I will get rid of him!

David was filled with anger after hearing Goliath's story and decided to strike Goliath.

David and Saul

David stood before Saul, the king of the Israelite army.

Incidentally, Saul was the first king of the Kingdom of Israel.

David...!

Saul, who had known David for some time, at first opposed David's going into battle.

However, it was true that there was no way to defeat Goliath, so he finally allowed David to go into battle.

David. If you are going to fight Goliath, take my armor and my sword.

Saul took off his own armor and gave it to David along with his sword.

But David said that

David image

I am sorry to trouble you, but I don't want it. It is difficult for me to walk if I wear something I am not used to.

David was to challenge Goliath wearing nothing but a shepherd's staff, a slingshot, and five smooth stones he had picked up in the river.

David and Goliath

Goliath laughed when he saw David.

Goliath image

What's the matter with you? Well, that's all right. Come now. I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field.

David image

Goliath, you may fight with sword and spear, but I fight in the name of the LORD, the God of Israel whom you have blasphemed. People will learn that battle is not decided by the strength of sword and spear. This is the battle of the God of Israel!

Hearing this, Goliath rushed at David.

David took out a stone and released it with such force that it hit Goliath in the forehead.

Goliath image

Gyaa! !

The stone hit Goliath so hard that he fell on his face and went into a coma.

David approached the comatose Goliath, took the sword he was holding, and beheaded Goliath to finish him off.

Thus, David was able to win the battle against Goliath.

After the battle with Goliath

David's fame spread after his victory against Goliath, and he came to serve as a close associate of Saul, the king of Israel.

Later, he would become the king of Israel.
