What is 1 Maccabees?

Origin of "Maccabee"

The name Maccabee comes from a Hebrew word meaning "hammer" and was given to Judas Maccabeus, the leader of the revolt, because of his bravery in battle.

He was known for using a hammer or sledgehammer as his weapon.

The Maccabees were a family of Jewish warriors who fought in a rebellion against the Greek rulers of the Holy Land.

Their name comes from a special battle-cry to God and some people think it means "the one chosen by Yahweh (God)".

1 Maccabees Synopsis

The book is about a Jewish family that fought back against a Greek ruler who tried to stop them from practicing their religion.

The family and their friends were successful and were able to continue to worship as they wished.

Rule of Alexander the Great

Alexander the Great conquered the area of Judea and was succeeded by Antiochus IV Epiphanes.

Here are his policies against the Jews:

  1. Occupation of Jerusalem
  2. Remove sacred objects from the Temple
  3. Impose taxes
  4. Trying to stop observance of Jewish law
  5. Establishing pagan rituals in the Temple
  6. Forbidding the practice of religion and killing those who disobeyed

They eventually won and were able to practice their religion again.
