Like many of us, I know the story of Moses and the Israelites.
But I wasn't aware that there was more to the story—in fact, a whole lot more.
The book of Joshua is all about how the Israelites crossed over into Canaan, or as we know it today, Palestine.
Moses leads the Israelites out of Egypt
Moses was a Hebrew born during the time of the Pharaohs.
He was the son of Amram and Jochebed, who gave birth to him in Egypt.
Moses grew up in Pharaoh's palace, where he learned all the wisdom of Egypt.
When Moses was 40 years old, he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew slave.
What are you doing!
And he killed him out of anger.
He then fled from Egypt to Midian where he married Zipporah, daughter of Jethro (a priest).
After serving many years as a shepherd for Jethro's flocks, God commanded him,
Lead your people out of slavery into freedom.
Moses agreed and returned to Egypt with
- Aaron (his brother)
- Zipporah (his wife)
- Gershom & Eliezer (their two sons)
There he confronted Pharaoh about freeing his people after seeing one too many miracles performed by God through Aaron’s staff which turned into a serpent when touched by water on it!
This story is recorded in the Old Testament Book of Exodus.

Israelites wander in Sinai desert for forty years
The Israelites wander in the desert for 40 years.
After Moses died, God told Joshua
Lead the Israelites into the Promised Land.
But they were not allowed to fight any of the Canaanites living there or enter their cities.
They were also not allowed to go back and pick up anything they had left behind during their journey.
Instead, they had to carry out all their belongings as they went forward.
This is why soldiers today call it,
Grab and go
when going into battle—because that’s what you do with all your belongings!
As a result of these rules, which God gave so that He could keep His promise not just for one generation but for generations after that (so long as Jews kept following Him),
Why God made these stipulations at all?
Many people have wondered so.
